Minimal Invasive Spine Surgery

Minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) is a type of surgery on the bones of the spine that uses smaller incisions and specialized instruments to access the spine, compared to traditional “open” surgery which involves longer incisions and more extensive muscle retraction. This technique aims to reduce tissue damage, blood loss, and recovery time while achieving similar surgical goals as open surgery.

Key Aspects of MISS :-
  • Minimizing Tissue Damage :- MISS utilizes techniques that cause less damage to muscles and surrounding soft tissues compared to traditional open surgery, which often requires significant muscle retraction to expose the surgical site.

  • Smaller Incisions :- Surgeons make one or more smaller incisions (cuts) in the skin to access the spine. Endoscopic procedures may even utilize incisions as small as 2 to 5 mm.

  • Specialized Tools and Technologies :- MISS procedures utilize specialized tools like tubular retractors to create a tunnel to the problem area and gently push aside muscles and soft tissue, as opposed to cutting them. Endoscopes, microscopes, and real-time X-ray imaging (fluoroscopy) are also used to enhance visualization and precision during surgery.

Common Conditions Treated with MISS:

MISS can be used to treat a variety of spinal conditions, including :-
  • Herniated disks

  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)

  • Degenerative disc disease

  • Spinal deformities (like scoliosis)

  • Spinal instability

  • Spondylolisthesis (when a vertebra slips forward)

  • Vertebral compression fractures

  • Spinal tumors

  • Infections in the spine

Benefits of MISS :-

Compared to traditional open surgery, MISS offers several potential benefits :-
  • Shorter recovery time :- Faster healing due to reduced muscle and tissue damage.

  • Less pain after surgery :- Fewer muscle and soft tissue injuries contribute to less post-operative pain.

  • Smaller scars :- One or more smaller incisions compared to a single large one.

  • Reduced risk of infection and bleeding :- Smaller surgical wounds and less tissue damage can lower these risks.

  • Shorter hospital stays or outpatient procedures :- Some MISS procedures allow patients to go home the same day or within 1-2 days, compared to longer stays for traditional surgery.

Recovery After MISS :-

Recovery time varies depending on the specific procedure and the patient’s overall health, but it’s generally faster than with open surgery. Physical therapy may be recommended to help regain strength and flexibility. Patients will receive instructions on incision care, activity limitations, and follow-up appointments.
