Endoscopic Spine Surgery (ESS) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that treats various spinal conditions with minimal disruption to surrounding tissues.
Compared to traditional spine surgery, ESS is minimally invasive, using small incisions and causing less tissue disruption, which can result in less pain, reduced scarring, and a faster recovery. ESS allows for precise targeting of the affected area and can often be performed on an outpatient basis. These factors generally contribute to improved patient outcomes.
ESS can treat various spinal conditions, including spinal stenosis, herniated discs, sciatica, low back pain, and facet joint syndrome. It can also address degenerative disc disease, vertebral compression fractures, arthritic problems, radiculopathy, failed back surgery syndrome, and disc tears.
The ESS procedure involves administering mild sedation, positioning the patient, and guiding a needle to the affected disc using X-ray imaging. A small incision is made, and a tube is inserted to create a pathway for the endoscope. The endoscope provides a magnified view, allowing specialized tools to remove problematic tissue. Finally, the instruments are removed, and the incision is closed.
Patients are typically able to go home the same day and are encouraged to walk. Initial discomfort is common in the first week, followed by decreasing pain in the following weeks, with many patients returning to work within 2-3 weeks. Full recovery with minimal restrictions for light exercise and daily activities is often seen by week 6 and beyond.
